The Garden City Kiwanis Club is the local presence of Kiwanis International. Our neighboring clubs are organized to coordinate our activities though the Kiwanis Long Island South Central Division of Nassau County. The divisions across New York pool their resources through the New York District Kiwanis.
An example of the accomplishments that can be made through this pooling of resources is Kamp Kiwanis. In 1969 The New York District Kiwanis created a Foundation which was able to acquire and renovate a property in Taberg New York establishing a Kamp Kiwanis, a camp for underprivileged children throughout the New York District which officially opened in 1971. Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and adventure. It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is designed to mainstream all children, including up to 20 each session with special needs. It is non-competitive with emphasis on group and team building. No activity is forced, but all are encouraged.
Each year, the Kiwanis helps kids around the world. Local clubs look out for our communities and the international organization takes on large-scale challenges, such as fighting disease and poverty. We are generous with our time. We are creative with our ideas. We are passionate about making a difference. And we have fun along the way.
For more than a century, Kiwanis has created opportunities for children to be curious, safe and healthy regardless of the community in which they live. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive, great things can happen. Service is at the heart of every Kiwanis club, no matter where in the world it’s located. Members stage nearly 150,000 service projects and raise nearly US$100 million every year for communities, families and projects. By working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone.
The Garden City Kiwanis club focus on changing the world by serving children, one child and one community at a time. Some of the key events and activities we support, include:
  • College Scholarships, each year we award scholarships to Garden City students that exhibit a strong interest in community service. These scholarships are one of the largest awarded by any community service organization.
  • The St. Patrick's Day Luncheon, an annual event bringing the community together for a fun filled afternoon while raising funds for our Foundation.
  • Adopt a family is an annual effort during the holidays each year. We provide dinners for 75 to 100 families in addition to gifts to the children. No child should be without a holiday present!
  • Mother's Day hospital donations. 2 years ago a call went out throughout the district letting us know about an ongoing problem in many of our hospitals. There are new mothers who don't even enough money to cloth their infants after giving birth. Each year we now celebrate Mother's Day by brining hundreds of dollars of infant wear to a local hospital.
  • We sponsor each year 6 to 8 underprivileged youths for a week at Kamp Kiwanis.
  • The Victory Games Challenger games are held each year at Mitchell Field. we serve a barbeque lunch for all the participants on opening day and see to it every participant leaves the event with a gift.
  • We proudly sponsor the Kiwanis of Adelphi (Circle K) and Key Club (High School).
  • We are a contributor to the Pediatric Northshore Trauma Center and Eagle Scout Projects.
  • The Kiwanis Easter Bunny gives out Lollipops at the annual Car Parade each Easter Sunday.
  • We do a Bagel Run to Island Harvest every Friday morning.
